After upgrading Tableau to 9.2, can't I publish books to the Tableau server (9.1)?

Has anyone experienced this? This is very unpleasant, since I spent several hours preparing books in the updated version 9.2. I am trying to publish to Tableau Server 9.1, but this will not allow. It looks like I might have to spend a few more hours re-creating the toolbar at 9.0 (9.0 is compatible with the Tableau server, but we don't have 9.2).

Here's a little hack that works.

  • Unzip / unzip the .twbx file if you have a .twbx file to get the .twb file. (To unzip / unzip: change the file extension from .twbx to .zip and unzip the .zip file as usual. On OSX, double-clicking the .zip file in Finder, unzip it and display the highlighted .twb and .tde ).
  • Open the .twb file in a text editor.
  • At the top you will see a line like this
 <workbook source-platform='win' version='9.1' xml:base='http://bi.teslamotors.com' xmlns:user='http://www.tableausoftware.com/xml/user'>

  • Change version='9.2' (which is the version of Desktop Desktop that you saved in the .twb file) to a version compatible with the server, for example. version='9.1' . Open the file in the version of Desktop Desktop that you just switched, for example, to. Tableau Desktop 9.1 in this case. (The table allows you to install multiple parallel versions on the same computer ).

  • Now you can publish your control panel to the Tableau server.

Please note that this is really a hack in order to save hours of repeating the same work (since Tableau does not have a simple copy-paste!), And, of course, it is recommended to follow the official method suggested by other posters.

The table is not backward compatible.

This applies to both desktop and server.

Workbooks created in the new version will not open in the previous version of the software. In addition, he will not be able to publish the previous version of the server.

You may need to recreate everything, or you can upgrade your server.

Workbooks and statements that are saved in a later version of the desktop are updated and cannot be opened by any earlier versions. Exception: On the desktop 8.2, you can open the book version 8.3. Workbooks created in a later version of Desktop Desktop cannot be published in earlier versions of the Tableau server. Exception: books created using Desktop 8.3 can be published on the Tableau 8.2 server. For example, books created on the desktop 9.2, can not be published Server scoreboard 9.1. Workbooks and data sources downloaded earlier than the Tableau server can be opened using the latest version of Desktop.

Typically, upgrade your server version to the desktop. For example, if you have server version 9.1, it will only accept current and previous versions 9.1, 9.0 for desktop computers, etc. Always keep your desktop version at or near your server version to maintain compatibility. As already mentioned, the easiest solution is to upgrade your server to 9.2, if possible. Good luck.

As a rule, major releases (9.0, 9.1, 9.2, etc.) do not support backward compatibility. I highly recommend updating both the desktop and server versions at the same time and always make the server first. Thus, you do not face the problem that the server cannot read what you create on the desktop.
