Create a standalone executable with Julia script?

Is it possible to create something like a standalone executable using the Julia script program?

In offline mode, I mean that the executable should be able to run on the system (of the same OS) without Julia.

Many members of the Julia community are interested in this functionality. However, the main Julia developers do not consider this important / urgent ( 1 ). Therefore, several community members have developed several packages, but they are not very stable / complete ( 2 and 3 ).

PackageCompiler seems to be the best option for compiling the static binary currently available.
