What is the reason for level 42 in Docker?

In different places, I found information that the docker image can consist of only 42 layers. This is apparently a limitation of the AUFS file system used.

Can someone tell me why this limit exists or does anyone have documentation explaining this?

This seems to be mainly related to AUFS ( sfjro/aufs4-linux).
See PR 50 "Prohibit more than 42 layers in the core"
