What is typescript transform

I just read an article on the official angular 5 blog ( https://blog.angular.io/version-5-0-0-of-angular-now-available-37e414935ced ). They are talking about typescript conversion. More details:

"TypeScript Conversions Under the hood, the angular compiler now works as a typescript transform, making incremental rebuilds much faster. Typescript transforms are a new feature introduced as part of typescript 2.3 that allows you to connect to the standard typescript pipeline.

I would like to better understand this. Transformation or compilation of a pipeline, what is it? TNX!
