Gradle Project Update Error: Already Completed

Background: I struggled with Studio / Gradle for a day or so at this point; initially there were multiple PEBKAC errors (namely, permissions and resource restrictions) that have since been resolved. Unfortunately google-fu could not handle this current error.

An error occurred while trying to complete ./gradlew clean, which did not complete successfully; it failed for about 30 s.

I temporarily “fixed” the problem by blowing off the offensive repo and sorting it out again. I found that the error, apparently, occurs only on a certain branch (i.e., switch to x_branch, start a "clean project", "get an error"), but have not yet figured out why. Attempting to switch to another branch or back to the master after receiving an error will not return gradle back to working condition; the error remains.

Mistake: Gradle project refresh failed: Error: Already finished

Env system: Android Studio 3.1 // gradle version 171.4250

My question (s): Has anyone seen this error before? What does this error mean and how can I prevent it from reappearing?
