How can I draw a curve that changes in thickness along its path?

I am collecting data from a tablet using Java (rocks of the JPen library) and would like to be able to draw penstroke in a more natural way.

Currently, I am drawing a pen stroke as straight line segments, each of which has a different stroke thickness.

There should be something in the Java Graphics Library that allows me to do this more efficiently.

Right?
