What is your experience with flash drives?

EMC sells solid state flash drives , and my project is thinking about moving in that direction in the future. Does anyone have experience replacing traditional disk storage with flash drives? Besides the price, have you encountered technology flaws?

I used SSD machines instead of regular hard drives. There seems to be no real benefit. You might think that they will be faster; they are not. You think that they consume less energy, but in fact it is not.

The main disadvantage is that they have a finite number of records available. Permanent burning to disk (as most operating systems do) will carry an SSD much faster than a regular disk.

Several people have imposed restrictions on writing to flash. This is not a big problem for the best SSD systems - especially for the high-end ones that people like EMC use.

Take a look at the Intel X25-E , for example . It uses a single-layer cell (SLC), which can process more records than a cheaper, denser multi-layer cell (MLC), which is used in low-performance and reliable SSDs. Typical parts of the SLC these days have endurance records of 100,000 records.

I don’t know if these SSD hard drives suffer (unlike pens and memory cards), but I highly recommend that memory buyers all check their memory.

When I get the time, I will write a simple open source tester for Linux that implements a random byte method.
