DVD Menu Encoding

As a programmer, I have no idea how to go about programming menus for DVDs, I heard that this is possible, and even saw basic games using the DVDs menu - although it may well be a closed system. Is this possible, and if so, what language, compilers, etc. Exist for this?

There are several open source projects that can create DVDs and menus. I recently used dvd-slideshow to create a simple dvd with menus, etc. Another DVD Styler . All these programs are basically an interface for various command line tools for encoding, creating menus, etc. Since these are open source projects, you can take a look at the source and see how they do it.

The DVD menus that appear on a typical DVD DVD are described in the DVD-Video: wikipedia standard .

If you are trying to create this type of menu, there are many programs that will create them. I got lucky with the DVD Styler .

It looks like http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/ can help here, as you can use the command line interface and feed the XML files.

You may need to write a framework that can generate xml files (and other content) from your game development tool.
