Interactive SVG - Learning Resources?

Question

Does anyone have any sources for learning how to implement SVG with php / mysql (and possibly with php-gtk)? I'm thinking of creating a garden art designer by dragging and dropping predefined elements (such as trees / bushes) and defined planting areas (circles / squares). Gardeners could then track over time how well a planting was done in a particular area.

I really do not want to get into the flash ...

I am looking for a similar solution, and here are two important questions: Scripting SVG and Displaying vector graphics in a browser .

None of them gives much hope, though, since each browser has different vector capabilities. Dojox.gfx seems to be a JavaScript-enabled graphics library that can do whatever you need, but it's not necessarily SVG. The canvas receives great support and interest.
