How to connect and administer a SQL Server database remotely over the Internet?

How to connect to SQL Server remotely and administer database objects? I need to connect to my database located on a web hosting server. I have the server name, IP address, username and password of my database. I have installed SQL Server 2000 on my computer.

Can SQL Server Enterprise Manager be used for this? A walkthrough will be very helpful.

Yes, you can use Enterprise Manager (or SQL Server Management Studio, even if it is an Express version) to connect to any SQL Server (the same or lower version as the tool you are using), you have a TCP / IP connection j. Just run it, enter the DNS host name or IP address in the "Server Name" field and click "Connect."

Two things can prevent this from working:

  • Your SQL Server is not configured to connect to TCP / IP. This is the default value from the 2005 version and can be changed using SQL Server Configuration Manager .

  • SQL Server, TCP/IP. : , , . , , ...

Enterprise Manager and SQL Management Studio simply use a standard client connection to SQL. The default TCP / IP port is 1433, but the host must allow this port through the firewall. If you are using a named instance, then I believe that you also need to connect to port 1434.

Most administrators do not allow direct access to SQL Server outside the firewall. In this case, if you can connect to the host through a VPN, you should be able to connect directly to the server using Enterprise Manager or SQL Management Studio.
