I went to school for programming many years ago, and when I left, I found a job in system administration, and this was aimed at my career. I would like to go back to some kind of development and “play” with C # and ASP.NET, but I heard a lot of noise for other “new” languages (with new ones, I mean that they are new to me), like Ruby and F #. I’m probably wondering if I’m wasting my time studying mostly MS languages instead of being more universal. Having not been separate from the developer community for a long time (if ever I have been), I am hesitant with trends, and I would like to keep up with the times.
Any thoughts if it is better to follow the “latest” languages or stick to more proven and true technologies?
You must learn at least 1 compiled language (e.g. C # or Java) and 1 Script language (Python, Ruby, etc.). This is usually enough to help most developers succeed in what they do, regardless of the age of the language.
As for the new vs old, I would stick with C # for now, as it is quite popular. Learning a new language would not be too bad though.
FROM.
Seriously, find out C.
If you don't start screaming so that the hills pull your hair out, then you are cut to be a developer.
