Creating a file execution bar in PHP

Question

Does anyone know of any methods for creating a file upload execution progress line in PHP? I often heard that this is impossible.

I have one idea, but not sure if it will work: there is a regular file upload, and instead send it to an iframe. When this is sent, store the file information (size and temporary location) in the session. At the same time, start an AJAX call every 10 seconds to check the file size compared to the size stored in the session. This will return the AJAX size, and then the progress bar will have a size and possibly display the loaded size for the user.
