Play a single note using DirectMusic

I am using DirectMusic to play MIDI in the application that I am developing. Does anyone know if DirectMusic can be used to play individual notes? I am currently converting a data structure in memory that represents entire “songs” into a MIDI buffer and plays them through DirectMusic. I would like to be able to play individual notes without creating a MIDI buffer for it, loading it and playing it. Is this possible with DirectMusic?

This is my first excursion into the world of DirectMusic, so I hope I'm not too ignorant of these possibilities ...

I believe that typing your notes in DirectMusicBuffer8 and then playing is really the easiest way to do this.

I assume that you know that DirectMusic is out of date, not recommended for new developments, etc. etc.

Hmm, I'll see if I can learn more about this on MSDN.

I know that DirectMusic is outdated, but I understand that XAudio2 has very poor MIDI support. If I am not mistaken in this, I would switch to XAudio2 in an instant if it supports MIDI, since I am only in the early stages of integrating DirectMusic into my application.
