Do moderate or large projects require an architect? I worked on a number of projects in which the interested development company chose not to appoint an application architect. Either the software is built organically and with little concern for design or responsibility for the design refers to senior developers.
The reasons for the lack of architects range from cost considerations, believing that the development methodology makes an unnecessary architectural role (this argument can be made for flexible development). Some open source projects work on the principle of collective contribution, rather than development with architectural guidance.
If you already have an architecture / system template that allows you to create your own project, you don’t need an architect at all.
I teach software architecture at the university, and the central skill that we believe architects represent is a systematic, rigorous design process that meets the needs of all interested parties with careful consideration of competing interests. There is a bunch of technical knowledge that architects should have, but it’s not uncommon for developers to have the same knowledge (and even more).
The key is to collect quality scenarios and know how to apply design methods / patterns that meet these qualities. Or invent something on the fly if you need to.

My experience is that sometimes an architect is simply not called. Usually, someone, or some group, is responsible for the overall code design. I had this technical leadership, team leadership or project. He also tends to be a developer who has the added responsibility of managing large-scale design. Perhaps I just worked in small development stores, but I never saw the point of having someone who works only with architecture, just not enough to do something in one project!
