Why compress sqlserver 2005 database?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of shrinking a database? Are there any performance implications?

  • Advantage: less disk space is used
  • Disadvantage: most likely, free space will end.

Basically, it is a compressed database with no free space that will need to be "grown" in order to perform almost any operation.

When SQL runs out of space in an MDF file, it must grow, and it is very slow and expensive.
