Beta testing a new product

As a Micro ISV I come on the scene to develop a new desktop software application where beta testing it with an external user group would be great.

I would prefer a private invitation only for beta testing, rather than public free for all beta testing.

Are there sites or organizations, both free and paid, where I can "reach out" to people (with a certain degree of selectivity) who want to test the software and provide error and error reports, etc.?

What did other people do when beta testing their products?

UPDATE: I came across TryBeta , which looks interesting (although the activity on the website seems to have ended around 2007).

As for turning testers into customers, I'm not too interested in this. Advertising on the target audience to create a customer base will be introduced at a later stage. Right now, testers ideally managed by a third-party website / organization would be ideal.

Thank you very much in advance.

Usually invitation-only beta testing limits you to existing or potential customers. If you have customers for this product (not because you say “new”) or other products in your company, invite them to test your product. They will not all say yes.
