Windows service upgrade process? Is it automated or is it manual?

If I have a Windows service on the server, what is the “best practice” for updating the service? (let's say there was a mistake in it, or I need to add more features to it).

Is there a way to shut down a service, fix it, and start it in a more automatic way?

(any links with code will be great)

Well, you can always find the version in the installer (if you used it) and run that, in my experience, it overlays the old versions with the newer.

InstallShield supports Windows services. Using installers will make your task a lot easier.
