What are some ideas (using .NET and SQL 2005) for implementing a service that sends emails? Emails must be data driven. The date and time the email was sent is a field in the table.
You can use triggers to send messages to UPDATE / DELETE / INSERT. Triggers can be implemented using .Net, just send emails from there using the classes in the System.Net.Mail namespace.
Here is a good article on how to implement CLR triggers (.Net) in .Net.

I was going to offer SQL Server notification services that did a great job. But I see that this was excluded from SQL Server 2008, so you probably don't want to go there.
SSRS data driven subsystems ? Just a thought.
