Trackbacks are fine, but they are very susceptible to spam, as there is no confirmation of their origin. You use a simple discovery method to find the trackpack entry point; Locate RDF in the destination site source. Then it is just a RESTful POST request to the destination trackback entry point, transmitting the necessary trackback information. Pingbacks are a bit more complicated because they require both XMLRPC and links. Therefore, when you can simply use REST calls to send anonymous trackbacks to any site, the sites that you pingback will look at your site to determine if you really link to the ping page.
