Where can I find good documentation on how to write XML-DTD?

The description of the DTD in the XML 1.1 specification is very brief, and it is difficult to get an estimate of what features are available. For example, if you look at the unflattened XHTML + MathML + SVG DTD , I know that you can import and partially redefine external DTDs, but I would never have guessed that this was possible when reading the specification.

Does anyone know of a good resource for learning the intricacies of writing DTDs?

I'm just kind of winged, using automatic completion from Liquid Technologies XML Studio ; they even had a tool that allowed me to give an XML sample on which I wrote XSD, and would try to derive a definition. Of course, now I understand that this is XSD, not DTD.
