Develop an application to run initially or switch to another platform?

What is your opinion on whether to write an application for a specific platform or use a cross-platform approach and attract more potential customers?

This will be a GUI based application, and I am thinking about using Java.

Most of the applications that I used in Java do not work as smoothly as the native applications on the respective platforms.

The two platforms that I think of are windows and poppies.

If I created the application only for my own use, and I had to choose one system, I would decide to focus on mac.

I would like to hear your thoughts.
