Programmatically use Gmail to receive email?

I would like to use the C # program to poll the gmail account and automatically download new messages. I know that you can use gmail as an outgoing SMTP server, but is there a way to access new messages sent to my account?

EDIT: Thanks for the quick feedback .... so I have two options: POP or IMAP.

Which should i use? And why?

EDIT # 2: Looks like IMAP allows me not to conduct the survey. Looks like going.
