Good file comparison tools have already been discussed with pain, but my problem is more exotic. Is there a visual text comparison tool (e.g. WinMerge) that allows me to easily visually compare two sections within a single file?
I have several configurations in the vcproj file and need to be supported. It hurts to do it manually - breaking windows, scrolling a characteristic symbol. On top of that, xml is very verbose and takes up a lot of screen real estate. I cannot believe that there is no tool for automatically comparing file files, as this sounds like a very common problem.
Please do not suggest me to use property pages, I do not want more complexity, I want less. Separating manually into files and then comparing them is also too medieval (I'm doing it now anyway).
I use Beyond Compare (not free, but I think the shareware version is available). You can select the same file for the left and right sides, then right-click on the beginning of your section on each side and select "Align manually." This will allow you to easily compare two sections of the same file.
