SSIS, dtsx and deployment packages

I'm just trying to understand SSIS packages a little better and how they are deployed. Correct me, I'm wrong, but for any deployment, I believe that there should be at least two files: .SSISDeploymentManifest and .dtsx..SSISDeploymentManifest acts as an equivalent Windows Installer package that points to .dtsx. Dtsx is the actual “material” package that is referenced as an external file, as when the installer starts. When you install it, the package is added to the ssis package list for this instance.

My further questions:

  • If I wanted to keep the previous version of the same package, can I just copy the bin directories with the two above files and save separately, do I need to go back to the previous package?
  • Where are these packages installed? How does SSIS know where the packaging machines are?
