When hiring a .NET web developer, I give the candidate a coding test.
I tend to limit the candidate to the MSDN installed on the test server - I think that it contains everything that a candidate needs to complete the task.
I admit that this is not an ordinary case, as I do not expect the candidate to do his job without using the Internet. On the other hand, I don’t want the Google candidate for a complete example and copy it, I want to evaluate his skills.
Question: Do I need to allow free use of the website during the test?
If you think the whole coding test is wrong, I would like to hear alternatives that you might have for me.
As you say: “I do not expect the candidate to do his job without using the Internet,” why not allow this during the test? But what if he copies and pastes? I do it too. Of course, the key is to know where to look, understand what you find, and apply it wisely. Do you want to hire someone with amazing memory or someone who can develop software for you?
When I was in school, calculators simply became available. Since their use was considered inevitable, exams were modified. The crunch prime was no longer tested as before (then it was important). Most likely, problem solving methods have been tested.
