Can I do it?
As I read about virtualization, I get more excited. The last thing that I understand, maybe it’s possible to take my existing workstation for developing XP Pro (VS 2005 / vs2008 / sql server, etc.) and just convert the whole installation into a virtual image and load into my new a box? Sounds good to be true? Is it that simple? If I can take a complete “dump” of the machine and just transfer it to a new workstation, I don’t even need to look for all my old installation disks, it’s really amazing.
Does one of the VM products support this better than the others? who can tip the scales for me to select one platform over another.
Anyway, that I no longer got on this escape? "
Change / update: as a quick update in case someone is interested. I got into the car, decided to go with vmware and win the battle, first trying to figure out which product to use, and then actually make something work. The instructions are not obvious and wasted my 6 hours trying: a) to get vmware working and b) actually trying to convert my old XP machine to a virtual machine - it never worked. In desperation, I booted up MS Virtual PC in a matter of minutes, started it up and started in 5 minutes, and created a VM in an hour .... VERY EASY. However, I did not understand how to convert my old XP machine to a virtual machine, but now that I have a virtual machine, it seems obvious to me that I don’t want to run the main development installation in my VW window at all.
