Strange key locks in IntelliJ IDEA (delete keys and arrows, etc.)

When working in IntelliJ IDEA, the keyboard is sometimes locked so that the delete or < > ^ keys do not work properly, so that delete does nothing and the arrow keys scroll through the entire source / editor section.

I don’t know if I accidentally have a shortcut, but the only way to return it to normal operation is to close and reopen the IDE, which, of course, is annoying.

I am on Mac OS X Lion, the latest IntelliJ IDEA CE (11.1.1), but also had this before with previous versions.

Check idea.log (Help | Show log ...) for exceptions. If you see the PSI/document inconsistency before reparse there, then you are probably affected by this error .

If there are other exceptions that are not related to this error, send the log to JetBrains Technical Support.

This answer on superuser.com worked for me:

Just unplug the Vim emulator from Tools , as shown in the figure:

I am new to IntelliJ and had the same problem with deleting delete . But I just realized that IntelliJ actually mimics the keys in Vim.

For example, when some text is selected, pressing d deletes the text by pressing y copies (yanks), pressing p inserts (puts) it, and pressing i enables editing (pasting).

For navigation, Ctrl + f will go to the next screen, Ctrl + b will go to the previous screen, and Shift + g will go to the end of the file.

All the same as in Vim.

I faced the same problem

Environment:

IDEA 14.1.4 on Ubuntu Gnome 15.04

Decision:

I work with default layouts, but for some reason the key card didn’t work by default. So I uninstalled the IdeaVim plugin and restarted the IDE, now everything works fine. File > Settings > Plugins and find the plugins.

I have the same problem periodically as a pain, because IntelliJ takes so much time to load in the first place, then I need to close it and start all over again!

I don't have a "PSI" anywhere in my IntelliJ magazines. I will post my magazines to IntelliJ; I hope they can fix it as soon as possible, as this is a big waste of time!

Other things I've tried:

  • Change the current keyboard layout - arrow keys do not work in any keyboard layouts
  • Closing and reopening only a project - the problem persists until IntelliJ itself is closed and reopened.
  • Try other keys. It seems that Ctrl and Command are completely ignored by the IDE when it falls into this state. Of course, all the text input keys still work, so you can enter text, just can't change the cursor position using anything other than the mouse and menu bar. As a last resort, one could work like this for a short period of time, but that would entail a significant masochistic series!

There is an open issue in jettrains youtrack for an intellij idea that recommends two solutions:

  • Keyboard input can be unlocked by restarting the IBus daemon ("ibus-daemon -rd" from the console).
  • IBus can be disabled for IDEA by disabling env. XMODIFIERS variables (for example, "XMODIFIERS = idea.sh"), but the ability to enter national characters in IDEA will be lost.

I used the second one and fixed my problem.

You may need to update your plugins. They can cause strange behavior if they are out of date.

If you run ibus restart , you will get a qwerty keyboard. For French users you can:

ibus restart; sleep 1; ibus engine xkb:fr::fra

I suppose you can change fr::fra to ru or us:dvorak:eng

I had the same issue when upgrading to IntelliJ 14.1.4. If you have the IdeaVim plugin installed, try disabling it. It worked for me. Link

In my case, backspace does not work, but only in the terminal. I fixed it by going

Preferences -> Terminal -> Check "Override IDE shortcuts"

Same problem for me today. My solution was to unplug and plug in the USB keyboard on my MacBook. Hope this helps.
