Good book to learn the Unix API?

I would like to learn how to program in pure UNIX using C kernell calls and all that, but I basically don't know where to start ...

Books are usually the best way, so I ask for it, but some good online content will be fine. But please, not Wikipedia - I don't want an encyclopedia, I want some book to guide me through unix APIs and show me what can be done there amazingly (e.g. Aaron Hillegass and its Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X) not a book to throw random things at me.

ok, this is pretty much my question.
