Between XLink, XPointer, and XInclude

What is the difference between XLink, XPointerand XInclude?

This is so confusing. Can someone explain the difference?

Short answer:

XLink and XPointer are very similar in the sense that they provide a way to reference other elements, however the main difference (apart from the syntax) is the following:

  • with xlink you can link to other or the same xml documents
  • with XPointer you can only reference parts of the same xml document
