What is and how to do WBS?

I would like to know how many of you (project managers and Tech) use WBS (work breakdown structure) to plan a project? I heard that it’s good, but then there are a lot of “good things” that will not work in the end.

Does this help in project planning? If so, how to do it right. perhaps some links / articles may help.

Please remember that I am not a project manager, but sometimes I have to carry out its tasks.

In traditional project management, WBS is an invaluable tool if used correctly.

2. Break the WBS down into work packages between 4 hours to 5 days long
3. Estimate on the work packages
4. Report your schedule against the top level(s) of your WBS

WBS is of utmost importance - according to Capers Jones: missing / unknown / incomplete requirements, design and plans are the main reasons for the failure of the project, helping WBS to detect and clearly determine the scope of the project. I used various whiteboard tools to display map tools. Do not let the tool bind your hands, find one that works, or just use paper.
