In SQL Server, only the host name is displayed, not the instance name

I just installed a new Windows Server 2008 machine with an instance of SQL Server 2008 Express. SQL Browser service is not working correctly. In Management Studio, server browsing shows the host name of the new server, but not the instance name. When you select a host name, the list is not connected. But I can connect manually by entering the hostname \ instancename combination.

update 1:

  • The browser service is running and I tried it with several different accounts, including a domain administrator, which is bad practice, but I still tried to troubleshoot.
  • I tried punching the corresponding holes in the firewall, and also completely disabled the firewall.
  • This runs on a 32-bit Hyper-V guest computer, Windows Server 2008, which resides on a 64-bit Windows Server 2008 host. I did this earlier (no problem) on the same host, but with SQL 2008 Standard instead of Express.
  • When I browse the server in SSMS (Express) on a SQL Server machine, it works fine and displays the name of the entire instance. When I view it on a remote computer (on the same intranet) with SSMS (standard), it just shows the host name.

update 2:

Then the packages follow, as suggested, and found the following

  • The client sent the broadcast as expected, and received the correct responses from other SQL servers on the same network.
  • The server received a broadcast but did not send a response.
