How to combine multiple applications with rails and share resources

I have an intranet that I developed then with PHP.

I process several applications and tools (blog, file sharing, file sharing, events, clendar ...) and a large user authorization system for logging in and managing authorization.

I would like to start rebuilding it with Rails.
I do not want to create one big application.
I would like to create a site as several small applications, using several common resources, such as user administration system, templates, layouts and navigation ...

The Rails Engine provides the ability to embed an application in another.
I guess I could have a "main" application that embeds all other applications. But I do not think this is correct (maybe I'm mistaken) if I have 10-15 different applications.

How do you do this?

Thanks.

We created applications that are divided into 2 - the user site and the administrator site. We just made 2 separate sites that have the same db and models, as well as their own views and controllers.

This works very well and gives us the freedom to treat each site differently in terms of security and deployment.

I have no experience going further than this.
