ULS Logging on a WSS 3.0 Server

Question

I have a scenario where I have WSS 3.0 only on the server, and I would like to be able to log in the ULS log. In most cases, I have MOSS 2007 installed on the same server and I can use the Microsoft.Office.Server.Diagnostics.PortalLog.LogString class / method, but this is not an option in this case.

Has anyone else been able to successfully log into the ULS log on the WSS server? If not, are you using a logging component like log4net etc. Or how do you register? It would be advisable to keep a journal in the ULS journal.
