When is it wise to use WCF over webclient or httpwebrequest?

I want to understand when to use WCF services, and not just use webclient or httpwebrequest. I probably also want to understand the difference between design patterns that would be suitable for both.

Are you talking about when to create a WCF service yourself (through a web service) or when to use an existing web service using WCF instead of .NET 2.0 ASMX clients?

How to create a WCF service yourself:

  • Provides you with more options in terms of hosting (in the application, Windows, IIS, WAS).
  • Provides you more security options.
  • ( HTTP, WS- *, TCP, Named Pipes, MSMQ ..)
  • .

WCF - HTTP (ASMX) - , , WCF , , WCF, .
