ITunesArtwork image: is it needed every time or just for special distribution cases?

I am not a sickle if I really need this 512 x 512 pixel icon every time, since I do not plan to use an Ad-hoc distribution. If I understand, Ad-hoc distribution is the case when you create an application that should work only on very few iPhone companies, and you don’t want anyone to get this application. If this is true, I choose a different type of distribution where anyone can get the application. Do I need this image in this case?

Yes, this is for AdHoc distribution, where people copy files to iTunes so that they can be added to their phone. Technically, you don’t even need this to distribute AdHoc unless iTunes displays the default image.

However, when sending to the application store, you need a 512x512 image that will be displayed in the store.

For special distributions: you can create a JPEG 512 x 512 image in your application as an iTunesArtwork resource, and iTunes will display it automatically.

However, there are two important rules:

  • image format must be jpeg
  • The file name must be "iTunesArtwork" without the file name extension.

Per developer.apple.com :

The iTunes image that your testers see should be your application icon. This artwork should be 512 x 512 JPEG or PNG file named iTunesArtwork. Please note that the file must not have the extension.

This will be an image that your testers will see, but your end users will not receive the final build.
