Portable Shared Objects?

Can I use shared object files in a portable way, such as a DLL on Windows?

I am wondering if there is a way to provide a ready-to-use compiled library for Linux. In the same way, you can compile a DLL in Windows and it can be used on any other Windows (normally, not any other, but on most of them it can).

Is this possible on Linux?
