What is an "opaque" key?

I know what a key is, I know what is opaque in other contexts, but what is an opaque key in a database context?

This means that it has no real meaning, except that it is used to search for records - it should be considered only as arbitrary data, without any other purpose than manipulation. For example, this almost always applies to GUIDs. Compare this to situations where the social security number may be the primary key.

They are also known as surrogate (opaque) and natural keys.
