What will be a good mini-project that will become intimate with JavaScript, as an advanced “introduction” to the language? I want to actually encode the application in JS, rather than connecting it to a web application extension.

The largest Javascript web projects will deal with the DOM. Do some great stuff with jQuery. Create a table with the rows that stand out when you hover. Get them to update themselves through AJAX and JSON when you click on them.
