Architecturally, how are iPhone apps installed from the AppStore?

When we click the install now button through the AppStore, I'm curious what happens to the process of getting the application on the iPhone?

Does it compress a zipped file? PKG? and the equivalent of XCOPY?

It downloads a file IPA, which is a technically archived file that contains the application, as well as DRM signatures and other materials. He deploys the application by copying the folder to /var/mobile/Applications/{GUID}/.
