Access World of Warcraft data from the Internet

I know the WoW developer community, but I can’t find the documentation, this is any API for accessing WoW databases from the Internet. I see that third-party sites like WoWHeroes.com and Wowhead use game data (element and symbol databases), so I know that this is possible. But I can’t figure out where to start. Is there a web service that I can use, or are they doing some kind of work under the hood that requires running a WoW client in their server environment?

Sites such as Wowhead and WoWHearoes use client add-ons from players who collect data. Then the data is sent to their website. Unable to access the WoW database. It’s best to get into the arsenal and extract the XML returned from your searches. Arsenal is just converting xml to xml return data.

Recently, Blizzard (8/15/2011) published a draft documentation for its RESTful APIs in the following location:

http://blizzard.github.com/api-wow-docs/

APIs cover information about characters, items, auctions, guilds, PVP, etc.

API requests are currently limited to 3,000 per day for anonymous use, but there is a process to register applications that have a legitimate need for more access.
