How long should you let the user stay online in the web application?

Background: We are creating an online application that requires the user to log in. We’ll add the ability to “keep me on this computer for six weeks.”

Question:

What is the normal standard for how long you should let the user stay on the system? * 2 weeks? * 4 weeks? * Forever and ever?

And why? Is there a reason why we should not allow our users to stay forever?
