Using SharePoint as a data source

I would like to create a CNA ASP.Net application and read-on information on our SharePoint site. Is this possible, and if so, how?

The best way for a stand-alone application to read data from a Sharepoint site outside the farm through Sharepoint Web Services . This page has a summary of what services are available and what everyone does. In Visual Studio, you can connect to them by creating Web References in the necessary services in your application.
