On a site like StackOverflow, should the Question and its votes be separate tables?

I am creating a site such as StackOverflow in Rails, but I am not sure if the votes to the question need to be stored in a separate table in the database.

Is there a good reason for sharing data?

Or can I save the Votes as one amount in the field of the table "Questions"?
