A large footer full of links, okay?

On some popular sites, I see really large footers with lots of internal navigation links.

Are there usability studies or even authoritative opinions on this subject?

Should I use large navigation headers in my future projects?

Pro and con footers

Pros: 1. Shortcut for pages 2. Source of navigation on scroll pages 3. Can provide an overview of the site (for example, a site map).
