How do commons dbcp (and other connection pools) manage public statements and result sets?

In particular, when I return the connection to the pool, dbcp (and other connection pools) close statements and results for me?

Or should I close them myself?

OK. I see that statements are closed by dbcp in DelegatingConnection.passivate () and DelegatingStatement.close () closes the result set.
