How can I directly print to a printer, such as a POS printer, over the Internet?

Can I print to a network printer from a web application? Are there any POS devices or similar printers with a form factor that can be connected to the Internet and printed directly (assuming the port is open through a router)?

My ideal case would be a printer to which I could send XML and print it without requiring a PC and therefore no driver.

Another thing that would be nice is to create a connection to the ssl printer, but that is not so important.
