Emacs as an IDE: Working with a Project Directory?

I have always used emacs for small projects (and Visual Studio for large). I was wondering what alternatives are for handling the directory structure in emacs, something like explorer in VS. Thanks.

You should also take a look at eproject for something easier, and also let you do some pretty cool things (for example, a project - special configuration settings, etc.)
