How to check web services?

I am new to web services. I am completely unfamiliar with testing web services. The new project requires me to test web services, and the client supports any open source tool. What is the approach to testing web services? Also suggest a tool (with minimal scripts) for testing web services?

Check out SoapUI - one of the best web service testing tools - plus free !!

They also have a “Pro” version that is worth it - you can do more things like stress testing, etc., but the free version is good enough for most of your tests, I would say!

Given the WSDL (online or saved as a file), it will create stubs for each method, which can then be used to create queries (as XML), fill in the blanks (parameter values), and then you can send your request to the web service and look what comes back in the answer.

SoapUI also allows you to write scripts that can be run over and over.

Great tool - can't praise it enough!

Alternatively, you can use Firefox Poster to test your web service by manually submitting XML packages.

robotframework has tons of built-in keywords, and there are additional libraries that do a lot more. You can also develop your own keywords in python, java, .NET or any other language.
