Is there a place for an intermediate database?

We stored our intermediate database on the production database server, taking into account the fact that it makes sense to be as identical as possible to production.

Recently, some comments have made me question this idea. Since there is some distant chance that I will do something on production by mistake, it might make sense not to put both on the same server.

Should my base database live on the same server as my development database, and not on the same server as the production?
