IE does not show .ico icons in HTML unless used as "image / x-icon"

I show website icons in a list as elements <img />.

some websites serve them like:

<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="favicon.ico" />

and some as:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />

IE does not show favicons that do not have type = "image / x-icon" .
I can’t control how websites serve their icons, so what can I do?
